Giving Back
Growing up in Chicago's Beverly neighborhood, my parents instilled in my sisters and me the understanding that we have an obligation to give back to the community. Their example inspired all their children to pursue careers in service to others. Giving back simply came naturally.
Educated in grade school, high school and universities sponsored by remarkable religious men and women, the values instilled at home were complimented by learning in school. My parents sacrificed and worked hard to allow their children to receive an excellent education. The addition of social teaching and the example of service of the institutions' religious sponsors laid the foundation for a lifetime of service.
After studying government and political science in college, I began a career in non profit management. I helped increase organ donations for transplant in local hospitals; promoted the work of the largest social service agency in the Midwest; responded to a national disaster; and became committed to outdoor/environmental education.
My interest in politics began when I was quite young helping the local precinct captain distribute flyers door to door. My dad and other neighbors showed me the ropes, campaigning door to door for Richard M. Daley in his first run for mayor. Hooked on politics, I continued to volunteer and campaign for admirable public servants.
Now after years of working in non-profits and helping other candidates get elected, I have another opportunity to make a difference and run for elected office. I am ready to take on the challenge of entering public life.
Government in Illinois remains broken. It is time for greater integrity and accountability in Illinois State Government. I remain convinced that public service is still a noble call and that politicians can act in an ethical matter.
Working in the non-profit environment, I have developed a tenacity to work within a limited budget to produce ever-improving results. Careful stewardship of resources leads to increased analysis of outcomes and attention to the bottom line. I want to bring this common sense approach to Springfield, learning to govern with fiscal discipline.
I am committed to strengthening families and communities. All children deserve a chance to have a quality education in neighborhood schools. I believe that everyone is better off when our police officers and firefighters have the support of the people they protect.
As I open a new chapter my life I am grateful to be surrounded by family and friends who support my efforts. And at the end of the day, the best legacy I can leave to my two sons is to demonstrate giving back to the community is a vocation worth living.
